Robert Palmer – Double Fun ( 1978, Island )
Rober Palmer nacque nello Yorkshire , cresciuto fino a dodici anni a Malta, tornò in Inghilterra. Le sue prime esperienze musicali furono, nella doppia veste di cantante e chitarrista , nei Vinegar Joe fin dai tempi in cui si chiamavano Dada. Nel 1974 esordì con “ Sneakin’ Sally Through The Alley “ , album notevole dove veniva espresso tutto il suo amore per il funky di New Orleans, il rockn’n’soul dei Little Feat e l’inclinazione per tutto quello che era pulsante. Ci furono altri due dischi e una nuova esistenza al caldo clima delle Bahamas, ma dovette aspettare questo “ Double Fun “ per sfondare negli States grazie al singolo “ Every Kinda People “. Il titolo dell’album è il riferimento alla vita condotta con piacere, con ironia, da esteta e la copertina proietta benissimo questa immagine con un Palmer sorridente a bordo piscina che osserva due bikini. Un prodotto impeccabile con alcune selezioni originali bellissime come il pop-reggae “ Best of Both Worlds “, la soul ballad “ Where Can It Go? “ e il rock’n’roll di “ You’re Gonna Get What’s Coming “ efficace canzone sull’ingordigia e sulla gente arrogante che crede di essere in credito col mondo. Ancora una versione nerissima e funky del classico di Allen Toussaint “ Night People “ e un interessante pop-rock di “ You Really Got Me “ dei Kinks , quindi “ Every Kinda People “, canzone diventata culto per il suo messaggio pacifista che porta la firma di Andy Fraser, ex-bassista dei Free. E’ un climax blue eyed soul accattivante quello che sui respira qui dentro, sia quando gli arrangiamenti si fanno scarni e funky, che quando diventano più orchestrali e costruiti. Al seguito la solita schiera di session men collaudati : i Little Feat, il fido Pierre Brock al basso, Michael e Randy Brecker, Brian e Brenda Russell.
